SR-DDRC Small Research Project Program
Applications due: August 15 at 11:59 PM in your US time zone.
The SR-DDRC is pleased to announce a new initiative to promote regional substance use research. The SR-DDRC Small Research Project Program provides special funding to conduct small research projects that utilize center data and that promote public health or public safety as it relates to the substance use crisis. This page provides information about eligibility, application requirements, the review process, key dates, and instructions for submitting an application.
“A lot of strong research ideas never get off the ground because of funding or data access,” said Dr. Jason Parton, SR-DDRC Principal Investigator and IDA Director. “This program removes both of those barriers for a year, which is a real chance for investigators to pursue questions they might not otherwise be able to and to contribute to a community of researchers working on these serious problems facing society.”
The SRPP competitive grant opportunity will award $10,000 to up to 10 research projects studying the substance use crisis in the region’s 17 states that stretch across the Southern U.S. The funds arise from a cooperative agreement between the Institute of Data & Analytics (IDA), part of the Culverhouse College of Business at the University of Alabama, and the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA).
Eligible applicants must have a sponsored programs office able to receive funds. No prior substance use research experience or SR-DDRC affiliation is required, and graduate students may apply so long as they secure a faculty or research staff sponsor at their home institution. Awardees will receive $10,000 per project (not inclusive of indirect costs) for a one-year period running from September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027. Each award requires four deliverables: (1) an intermediate project status report, (2) a plain-language summary for policymakers and community stakeholders, (3) a scientific manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, and (4) proof of journal submission.
Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on August 15, 2026. Awardees will be notified on or soon after August 31, 2026.
